Since last December my father has been battling cancer, and currently the prognosis is not good. You can read more on the issue here:
Now that I am here in southwest Texas with my father and our close family circle, there is a strange calm, as if we all know what must be done. There are small windows of consciousness, through which we can communicate with him. But the greater part of the time, he rests and prepares to let go of the meat-suit.
I am very thankful for the messages of support and kindness coming to me and my family here on various platforms. They do make a difference.

The spirit of this man leaves me breathless at times. You are a survivor, Dad.

The support of the Marfa TX community for my father’s battle with cancer is nothing short of completely amazing.
Last Saturday there was not one, but two benefit concerts in this tiny little place, which raised about $1800 for his medical costs. (Like many Americans, and certainly like many American artists, he has zero health insurance…) That and they partied their muthafuckin’ asses off!
Big love to the Marfa crew for this and so much more! If you want to read more about the situation, click here.

Near the end of my trip to Chile, I was informed that my father Steve is in the hospital with cancer. We have always been very close, and I am certain this wandering, mongrel-dog artist lifestyle I lead is due to his example. Realizing that someone I have respected so much my entire life is still a mere mortal came as a deep shock. My greatest wish for 2014 is that I can wander the desert like a mad fool with him again when he is well.

As the sun sets, there is a huge bank of blue clouds which have flowed over the mountains about 25 miles distant like a tidal wave in slow motion and swallowed them whole. My camera is temporarily out of commission, and even if it wasn’t I’m a lousy landscape photographer. There is no substitute for simply being there. I really have enjoyed my stay in Marfa and honestly hope I can bring a bit of the quiet I found here home with me.

I’ll be in Texas from mid December to mid January and if any of you have some tips on cowboy sartorialism, single-cactus tequilas and juke joints that play both kinds of music, now’s the time to send them my way. Right?
